What Are External Video Cards?
Every computer on the market has a video card. These video cards might be integrated into the actual motherboard, or they might be connected to the motherboard through a PCI, AGP or PCIE slot. Nowadays, there is another option for getting better graphics. The external video card will plug into your computer through a USB bus connection. The external video card is primarily used for people who want to use multiple monitors on their single computer. These work by running the image processing procedures out of the PC and through Graphics Processing Units or GPUs.
Who Needs an External Video Card?
So why would anybody really need an external video card? The majority of the people buying these units are using them for online gaming with laptops. Even though the laptop has great features for the mobile user, laptops do not offer the same upgrading options as a desktop. When the laptop user adds an external video card to their laptop, they can push the limits of graphics and get more frames per second for their online games.
However, adding and external video card to your laptop is not the best answer for some. The biggest drawback to using an external video card is the video card itself. The reason that most laptop users have a laptop is for mobility. Lugging around a bulky video card every time they leave the house can be annoying to say the least. Another drawback is the fact that all external video cards must run on dedicated power sources. This would mean that to use it, you would need to have a wall plug in available. Of course these drawbacks are not an issue for somebody who is looking to play a game out of their home.
If you’re thinking about adding an external video card to your computer, weigh the options. If you’re looking for a mobile solution to your video problem, this is probably not the way to go. If you’re looking for a cost effective way to gain an edge on your online games, go ahead and research the costs further. An external video card will always be cheaper than replacing a laptop or the crucial hardware that effects its video performance.
